The Secret Is Simply to Keep Going
Life has knocked me down many times, but I always find a way to stand back up. A personal reflection on falling, healing, starting again and simply keeping going.

People sometimes ask me how I manage to keep going through everything life brings.
The honest answer is, I don’t always know.
I don’t wake up every morning feeling strong and positive. I have days when I feel tired, disappointed or completely unsure about what I am doing. I overthink. I cry. Sometimes I want to switch my phone off, stay in bed and hide from the world for a while.
But eventually, I get back up.
That is probably the closest thing I have to a secret: I keep going.
Not because life has always been easy, and certainly not because I have handled everything perfectly. I have fallen many times. I have been hurt, disappointed and forced to accept situations I never expected.
I have made mistakes. I have trusted the wrong people. I have held on to things longer than I should have, and I have had plans fall apart just when I thought everything was finally coming together.
Every time, I have had a choice.
I could stay down, or I could slowly find my way back to myself.
So far, I have always chosen to get back up.
I Don’t Pretend It Doesn’t Hurt
Keeping going does not mean pretending everything is fine.
When something hurts me, I feel it. Sometimes I feel it very deeply. I give myself permission to be sad, angry, confused or disappointed.
I talk to people I trust. I cry when I need to cry. I stay quiet when I don’t have the words. I rest when I feel exhausted.
There is no prize for recovering quickly.
I used to think I had to be strong all the time. Now I understand that real strength can also mean admitting that I am not okay. It can mean asking for help or taking a step back before I become completely overwhelmed.
Some days, getting back up looks like making a big decision.
On other days, it simply means getting out of bed, taking a shower, answering an email or doing what needs to be done for my child.
Both count.
Not every step forward needs to be impressive. Sometimes the smallest step requires the most effort.
Life Has Asked Me to Begin Again
I have had to begin again many times in my life.
I have started again after heartbreak. I have adjusted when plans changed unexpectedly. I have walked into new chapters without knowing whether I was making the right decision.
Some endings were my choice. Others were decided for me.
None of them were easy.
There were times when I looked at my life and wondered how I had arrived there. I had imagined things turning out differently. I thought certain people would stay. I believed some plans were going to last.
Then life changed, as life does.
At first, change can feel like everything is falling apart. You are standing in the middle of something you did not choose, trying to understand what happened and what you are supposed to do next.
But I have learned that I don’t always need to know what comes next.
Sometimes I only need to get through today.
Then tomorrow.
Then the day after that.
Eventually, the thing that once felt impossible becomes part of my story instead of the centre of my life.
It does not disappear, and I do not forget it. It simply stops controlling where I go next.
Starting Again Is Not Starting From Nothing
Whenever I have had to start again, it has felt frightening. But I was never truly starting from nothing.
I was starting with everything I had learned.
I carried the lessons, the experience, the memories and a clearer understanding of what I wanted—and what I would no longer accept.
Even the painful parts gave me something.
They taught me to listen when something does not feel right. They taught me that actions matter more than promises. They taught me that I can love someone and still choose to leave. They taught me that losing one version of my future does not mean I have lost my entire future.
Most importantly, they taught me that I can survive change.
I may not enjoy it. I may resist it at first. I may cry and complain to my friends many times before I accept it.
But somehow, I find my feet again.
Not perfectly. Not all at once.
Just slowly, in my own way.
Keep Going Doesn’t Mean Keep Running
There is a difference between moving forward and constantly forcing yourself to move.
I am still learning this.
I have always been someone who keeps busy. There is work, motherhood, friendships, responsibilities, plans and all the small things that fill a normal day. It is easy to keep running and call it strength.
But sometimes the strongest thing I can do is stop.
Resting is not giving up. Taking a pause does not mean I have lost my direction.
Sometimes my body knows I need to slow down before my mind is ready to accept it. When that happens, I try to listen.
I let myself have the quiet evening. I cancel the plan if I truly need to. I sleep early. I step away from the noise and give myself space to breathe.
Then I continue when I have something to give again.
Keeping going should not mean destroying yourself just to prove that you can cope.
It means taking care of yourself well enough that you can continue.
There Is Still So Much Life Ahead
One of the most important things I have learned is that a painful moment is still only a moment.
When we are inside it, it can feel enormous. It can make us believe that nothing will ever feel normal again.
But life keeps moving.
A morning comes when the pain is not the first thing you think about. You laugh without forcing it. You make new plans. You meet new people. You discover parts of yourself that had been quiet for a long time.
One day, you realise you are living again.
Not the same life you had before, perhaps, but a life that still contains joy, love, purpose and possibility.
That is why I try not to make permanent decisions from temporary pain.
I remind myself that I have not yet met every person who will love me. I have not visited every place that will make me feel alive. I have not experienced every opportunity that is waiting for me.
There is still so much life ahead.
I don’t want one disappointment to make me close my heart to everything that may come after it.
I Am Proud That I Never Stayed Down
When I look back, I don’t only see the times I fell.
I see all the times I stood up again.
I see the woman who continued working while trying to put herself back together. The mother who still showed up for her child on the days when she felt tired. The woman who walked away when staying would have meant losing herself.
I see someone who did not always know the answer but kept taking the next step anyway.
I am proud of her.
Not because she was fearless, but because she continued while she was afraid.
Not because she never broke down, but because she never stayed broken forever.
Not because she always knew where she was going, but because she trusted that standing still in her pain was not the end of her story.
I am still learning. I am still making mistakes. I still have moments when I wonder if I am doing life properly.
Maybe none of us really knows.
Maybe we are all simply doing our best with what we know at the time.
So, if you are in a difficult chapter right now, you do not need to solve your whole life today.
Feel what you need to feel. Cry if you need to cry. Rest without feeling guilty. Let the people who love you sit beside you.
Then, when you are ready, take one small step.
You do not need to see the entire road. You only need to choose not to give up on yourself.
I have fallen. I have been hurt. I have had to begin again more times than I expected.
But I am still here.
Still learning. Still loving. Still building my life.
Still going.
From my heart to yours,
CM
